He wrote his first songs in 1964. His anti-establishemnt poetry touched the hearts of Soviet people but pinched the ruling regim. So, he was badly critisized, he suffered some pressure from the authorities and even had to write a complain to the Central Committee of Communist Party, the supreme governmental body of the USSR, in 1968. Despite the fact he collected stadiums of fans he could not join the societies of poets and musicians to legalize his creative work. As many Russian people having troubles Vladimir used to find consolation in vodka. The alcoholism killed him. He died on 25.07.1980 at age of 42. Eight streets in various cities of Russia and Ukraine and one asteroid bear his name. In 1970-1980 people adored his songs, specific hoarse voice and vigorous performance. Now, the new generations know him mostly by his roles in old Soviet evergreen movies, especially, the role of Gleb Zheglov, milice captain, in `Mesto Vstrechi Izmenit Nel`zya (The Meeting Place can`t be changed)`. His private live is another source of his popularity. In 1967 he met Marina Vlady, who became his third and the last wife. Their beautiful love story became widely known.
