Vasili Lanovoy is a notable Russian actor best known for his leading roles as Captain Grey in Alye parusa (1961) and as Vronsky in Anna Karenina (1967). He was born Vasili Semenovich Lanovoy on January 16, 1934, in Moscow, Russia, USSR. His parents, Semen Petrovich (1907–1979) and Galina Ivanovna (1910–1986) were simple Ukrainian peasants from the village of Strymba in Odessa region. In 1931 they flew from hunger to Moscow and worked at a plant producing chemicals. Vasili was 7 year kid when Nazi Germany attacked the USSR and invaded Ukraine. He and his sister were sent for summer vacations to their grand farther, to their Ukrainian village. They arrived a day after the war began. One day, when the village was occupied by the Germans, one soldier gave Vasili his belt but another one, from a different squad, ordered to give this belt to him. Vasili refused. the German fired the machine gun above his head to scare him. Vasili stammered for several years as a consequence. The separated family had no news about each other for three years, till the victory of the Soviet Union. Few days after the liberation his mother came to the village and take Vasili back home to Moscow. In 1952 he attended the acting class of Sergei Lvovich Stein at Moscow ZIL club, and made his stage debut in a play by Lev Kassil. But at that time He did not considered the staging seriously. He tried to enter the flying academy and become military pilot but Stein brought him back. Then Lanovoy entered the Moscow University to study journalism. In 1953, at age 18, he was cast in Attestat zrelosti (1954), making his film debut. From 1953 - 1957 he studied acting at Shchukin Theatrical School of Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow. There his classmate was Tatyana Samojlova, and they married in 1955, and later became co-stars in Anna Karenina (1967) by director Aleksandr Zarkhi. At the same time he appeared as Anatol in Voyna i mir (1967) by director Sergei Bondarchuk. Since 1957 Vasili Lanovoy has been member of the troupe at Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow. There his stage partners were such actors as Mikhail Ulyanov, Ruben Simonov, Boris Zakhava, Mikhail Astangov, Varvara Popova, Irina Kupchenko, Natalya Tenyakova, Yuliya Borisova, Lyudmila Maksakova, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya, Marianna Vertinskaya, Nina Ruslanova, Nikolai Plotnikov, Yuriy Yakovlev, Vladimir Etush, Vyacheslav Shalevich, Andrei Abrikosov, Grigori Abrikosov, Boris Babochkin, Nikolai Gritsenko, Nikolai Timofeyev, Aleksandr Grave, Yevgeni Karelskikh, Sergei Makovetsky, and Ruben Simonov, among others. His most memorable stage performances were as Protasov in `Deti Solntsa` (1968), as Oktavian in `Antony and Cleopatra` (1975), and the title role in `Kasanova` (1985). Since taking the role as Prince Calaf in 1963, Lanovoy has been delivering acclaimed performances in the legendary Vakhtangov`s production of Carlo Gozzi`s comedy `Princess Turandot`.
Vasili Lanovoy was designated People`s Actor of the USSR, was awarded the Lenin`s Prize (1980), and received numerous awards and decorations for his works on stage and in film. He is married to actress Irina Kupchenko, and the couple has two sons. Outside of his acting profession Lanovoy is fond of listening to classical music and singing Ukrainian songs together with his friends and family. In his 70s, he has been maintaining a good physical form through sports and pesco-vegetarian diet. He is living with his family in Moscow, Russia.

Vasily Semyonovich Lanovoy (Russian: Василий Семенович Лановой; born 16 January 1934) is a popular Soviet and Russian actor who works in the Vakhtangov Theatre, Moscow. He is also known as the President of Artek Festival of Films for Children. Lanovoy's honours include the KGB Prize, the Lenin Prize, and the title of People's Artist of the USSR.
