Profile Bio Text
Rachel Bolan was born as James Southworth on February 9th 1966 in Tom's River, New Jersey, USA. Having been influenced musically by bassists Gene Simmons (KISS), Paul McCartney (The Beatles) and Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper) and punk stars The Sex Pistols and The Ramones, Rachel began writing songs with Dave "Snake" Sabo in 1986. Roughly a year later Snake and Rachel decided it was time they completed a band line-up and aimed for the big time. The first addition was Scotti Hill (born Scott Mulvehill), a former bandmate of Rachel and a natural for the spot in Skid Row. Next up was drummer Rob Affuso. After much persuasion, Affuso jammed with the guys on "Midnight/Tornado" and accepted the offer of a place. Finally, a vocalist was needed. The four guys from NJ sent a demo tape to Sebastian Bach (born Bierk) in Toronto, Canada. It is said that Baz heard "Youth Gone Wild" and believed it was written for him to sing. He immediately became a part of Skid Row. The band was complete, and the guys were set to be huge.
The first gig was held at Rock N Roll Heaven in Toronto on New Year's Day 1988, followed by Skid Row's self-titled debut album in 1989. Skid Row went quadruple platinum worldwide. 1989 was generally a year of touring, supporting Bon Jovi in the US and Motley Crue in Europe.
Nobody could have predicted the success of Skid Row 1989's follow up "Slave To The Grind." Released in 1991, Slave debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart. Skid Row then opened for Iron Maiden at Donington in 1992.
1995 saw the release of "Subhuman Race", the tour for which saw Skid Row opening for Van Halen. In the next year or two, the band fell apart. Rob Affuso left, followed by Sebastian Bach, who's feud with Snake are well documented even today. With only three-fifths of the hugely successful line up remaining, Skid Row split up.
Rachel Bolan, however did not leave the music scene. He had been working on a side project called Prunella Scales with drummer Phil Varone and guitarists L. Wood and Tommy Southard. Prunella released their only album, "Dressing Up The Idiot" in 1997.
Then, in 2000, Rachel, Snake and Scotti got back together and formed Ozone Monday, later renamed Skid Row. Rachel found a drummer whom he considered ideal - Phil Varone of Prunella Scales. However, there was one task which seemed impossible. How could Skid Row replace the most unique, most eccentric talent in music? Baz was a hard act to follow, but the newly formed Skid Row felt that John Solinger was the man for the job.
In 2000, Rachel Bolan's Skid Row opened for his heroes KISS on their Farewell Tour. Y2K also saw a tour of small clubs to introduce the new look to the fans.
Currently, Skid Row are recording for another studio album.
