Kai was born in St Asaph on the 4th of September 1975, and was raised by his parents in the beautiful town of Llanrwst, which is in the heart of the picturesque Conwy Valley in North Wales. All of Kai’s family come from and still live in Llanrwst, and some of Kai’s best mates live and work there.
Kai went to school at ‘Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy’ and has nothing but happy memories of his time in school, “I loved school, I had such a fantastic time, I made mates for life there and I still see them now, I was a member of the school football team and most things to do with sport, I played football everyday, If I had the time I’d play it everyday now too!!”
As well as football and sports Kai had a natural confidence to perform or “show off” as he says, often playing the class clown Kai quickly became involved with the school drama group and staged many a production with them.
“ I remember doing the musical “Oliver”, I played “Fagin” and had such a ball, I kind of got hooked on the buzz then”, And with the guidance of teachers Joy Ostle and George Lloyd Kai embarked on a three year Acting and Musical course at Mountview Theatre school in London.
“Without the help and support of my school teachers Joy Ostle and George Lloyd, I would probably still be in Llanrwst working in the butchers! I am so grateful to them”.
Kai graduated from Mountview in1998 and went straight to work at Stafford Castle playing “Ariel” in “The Tempest”, Kai has since gone on to become an associate actor at “Clwyd Theatr Cymru” Wales’ premier theatre company, appearing in over fifteen productions for them, Kai has performed all over Wales with various companies in a variety of roles.
Kai then broke into television on the welsh language channel S4C playing “Bob Lewis” in the award winning “Treflan” from this he played the part of “Kev” in the long running series “Tipyn O Stad”
After playing “Kev” for three years Kai moved back to London where he made his west end debut playing the role of “Harry Secombe” in “Ying Tong a Walk with the Goons”.
Not long after that show closed Kai landed the role of “Shiner” in “Rocketman” where he played opposite Robson Green, “Rocketman was just fantastic!, it was my biggest and best job to date, the whole job was one of my happiest times, a great cast of people and I loved working in Newcastle. Robson was great and I have nothing but fond, fond memories of my time on that show”.
“Torchwood” started filming in the April of 2006 and Kai has played the role of “Rhys” in three series, the show has gone from BBC3 to BBC2 and the third series aired on BBC1 in July 2009, it broke all records for viewing figures on BBC3 and BBC2, and brought in huge audiences for the series 3 epic adventure.
“I feel incredibly lucky to be part of something like “Torchwood”, every day at work is so different but absolutely bonkers, I work with the best writers, crew and cast. And to be filming in and around my capital city of Cardiff is just a bonus”.
In 2009 Kai appeared in the long running Welsh language drama “Pobol y Cwm”. This year Kai has filmed an episode of the BBC3 Drama “Being Human” and the welsh language series "Gwaith Cartref". In 2011 Kai travelled to Hollywood to film the 4th series of the award winning BBC Drama Torchwood which sees him return as the much loved character of Rhys Williams.
