Profile Bio Text
George Ryan Ross is the former guitarist and lyricist of the band Panic! At the Disco and current frontman, vocalist, lyricist and guitarist of the band The Young Veins.
Ross was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended Bishop Gorman High School. He studied Creative Writing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas but dropped out after a semester to focus on music.
Ross has said that his father, who died on July 28, 2006, disliked his life decisions, and that they were not close. Ross grew up with his father after his parents divorced when he was about three years old. In an earlier article of the Rolling Stone magazine, Ryan mentioned that he used to listen to country and dress up like a cowboy. As he grew up, Ross started listening to more mainstream rock with his friend and later bandmate Spencer Smith.
Ross and Smith met when they were five and six years old respectively. Smith recalls in the January 2007 issue of Rolling Stone, that Ryan was hitting golf balls across the yard into the neighbors`s yards. Ever since then, the two were best friends. In a recent interview, Spencer said that during those years growing up, they had a lot of sleep overs and that he had slept with Ryan quite often in a twin sized bed. Jon Walker, bassist of the band, later joked saying that he had slept with Ryan recently and that "..it was the best sleep I`ve ever had."
Panic! At the Disco formed in 2005 when Ross and Smith's blink-182 cover band The Summer League lost a guitarist and bassist Brent Wilson brought in Brendon Urie to audition to replace him. When it was discovered that Urie had a strong singing voice, he was made singer and the band began to work on original songs. Ross provided the band with many of its lyrics and much of its songwriting. He was also responsible for the bands label signature, as he took it open himself to send the bands' songs to Pete Wentz, who at the time was establishing his own imprint record label. Ross dropped out of college to record the record and was touring by the age of nineteen.
After two studio records, Ross and fellow bandmate Jon Walker announced their attention to leave Panic! At the Disco to form a new band, citing musical differences. They went on to form psychedelic rock band The Young Veins, for whom Ross sings, plays rhythm guitar, writes lyrics, and shares the songwriting process with Walker. After one album release and a mildly successful national tour opening for Foxy Shazam, The Young Veins have gone on hiatus following the theft of the band's equipment. Ross currently spends his time in the underground music scene of Los Angeles, where he recently released a collaboration song with Alex Greenwald of Donnie Darko and Phantom Planet fame.
