Profile Bio Text
Robert James Smith was born 21 April 1959 in Blackpool Lancashire, England to Alex and Rita Smith. He was the third of four children (Richard, 12 July 1946, Margaret, 27 February 1950, and Janet, 30 August 1960). Robert lived in Blackpool until he was three and then his family moved to Horley, Surry, England where he later attended St. Francis Primary school and in March 1966 his family moved once again to Crawley Sussex, England, where he then attended St. Francis Junior School until 1970 where he spent two years at a middle school called Notre Dame which was an experimental school whose teaching methods were supposed to be revolutionary. From 1972 to 1977 he attended St. Wilfrids Comprehensive School. 20 year and 20 albums later, The Cure have done it all in the only way they know how. Free, independent, willful, and unconfined, The Cure`s achievements on every level have been unbelievable.
It started in 1976 when The Easy Cure was formed by Robert, Michael Dempsey, Lol Tolhurst and Porl Thompson. They started writing and demoing their own music, songs like Killing and Arab, and 10:15 Saturday Night. It wasn`t until 1978 that the band dropped the Easy from the dame and also dropped Porl Thompson. As a trio the band was signed to Fiction, Chris Parry`s recording label.
In 1979 Killing and Arab was released and was soon followed by the band`s debut album Three Imaginary Boys (Roberts least favorite). While touring around the UK two more singles were released; Boys don`t Cry and Jumping Someone Else`s Train. At the end on the year Michael had left the band and was replaced my Bass Guitarist, Simon Gallup, also keyboardist Matthieu Hartly joined the group. In 1980, the now four piece band produced a dark contemplative album called Seventeen Seconds. From the album A Forest became their first real hit single. After a world tour Matthieu left the band and the band was once again a trio. In 1981, Faith was released, which had a successful single called Primary.
In 1982 A deep dark depressive album sparked life which was called Pornography. A tour took place which turned really ugly. Robert basically sacked Simon in the middle of the tour and then returned home. Robert and Lol continued on and soon a disco sounding song was created called Lets Go To Bed. In 1983, the band released a number of single which eventually became the album Japanese Whispers. In 1984 the band became a foursome again adding Phil Thornlley and Andy Anderson to the group and later on Porl Thomson came back. The top which had the hallucinogenic song called The Caterpillar, was released. The band toured and various songs from random concerts was released an album called concert. At the end of the tour, Phil and Andy left bringing back Simon Gallup and introducing Boris Williams. The 1985 release was called Head on the Door. The Cure now felling alive set off on a world tour and in 1986 a collection of all the singles of the past ten years had been made and it was called Standing on the beach (LP) or Staring at the Sea (CD). Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me was released in 1987, and Roger O`Donnell was added to the band as the Keyboard player.
As the `80s came to a close in 1989 the rainy day hit album Disintegration was released. Lol was also asked to leave the band. In early 1990 after a short time with the band, Roger left, and group mate Perry Bamonte joined, and the album Mixed up, which was a dance mix of various Cure hits, was released.
In 1991 the band won a long overdue "home recognition" at the British music awards. They received an award for best British Band. In 1992 Wish was released along with a live concert video called Show and in 1993 the album Show followed along with a live album called Paris. The band contributed the song Burn for The Crow, and covered the Jimi Hendrix song Purple Haze.
In 1995 a new drummer, Jason Cooper, was introduced to the group after the unexpected leaving of Boris Williams. Also Roger O`Donnell Rejoined the band on Keyboards. The band contributed the song Dredd Song for Judge Dredd. When 1996 came along, Wild Mood Swings was released and found its way into almost every top ten world wide.
The twenty year mark soon hit and Galore, which included all the singles from 1987 to 1997 was released. A video of all the music videos on the new album was also released. In 1998 The Cure wrote Something More Than This for the X-Files Movie soundtrack and Robert lent his voice to South Park where he played himself. The band found themselves completing the new album Bloodflowers in 1999 and it was released in 2000. In late 2001, the band released an album of what they consider to be their greatest hits.

Robert James Smith (born 21 April 1959) is an English musician. He is the lead singer, guitarist, lyricist and principal songwriter of the rock band the Cure, and its only constant member since its formation in 1976. NY Rock describes him as "pop culture's unkempt poster child of doom and gloom," and asserts that some of his songs are a "somber introspection over lush, brooding guitars." Smith's guitar-playing and use of flanging, chorusing and phasing effects put him among the forefront of the gothic rock and new wave genres. He also played guitar in the band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Smith is a multi-instrumentalist, known for his unique stage look, such as teased hair, smudged makeup, and his distinctive voice.
