Profile Bio Text
In the 1990s Paul Reiser became one of a plethora of stand-up comedians given the golden opportunity of creating his own sitcom. "Mad About You," which co-starred Emmy-winning Helen Hunt as his wife, was a huge success and enjoyed a very long and very comfortable run, placing Paul squarely on the entertainment map. Born and raised in New York City, he showed early comedy instincts and was drawn to the Greenwich Village clubs that featured such idols as George Carlin, Robert Klein, and David Steinberg. He subsequently majored in music at S.U.N.Y./Binghamton and participated in drama classes, but found his real forte performing in front of audiences at the Improv and Comic Strip clubs. Unexpectedly while accompanying a friend to an audition, Paul got to read for director Barry Levinson and won a coveted role in the classic film Diner (1982) which sparked the careers of future stars Kevin Bacon, Tim Daly, Steve Guttenberg and Mickey Rourke as well. Maintaining his status as a comedic actor, he won other film roles as well, including the "Beverly Hills Cops" movies and in Aliens (1986). Typically playing amiable, excitable, neurotic and self-effacing types, it all culminated with his hit TV series in which he had exerted control behind the scenes as co-creator and producer as well as on-camera star. Since this success, Paul has maintained a lower visual profile, involving himself instead with writing and executive producing chores.
