Mission: Impossible – Fallout is a 2018 American action spy film written, produced and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. It is the sixth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series, and the second film to be directed by McQuarrie, after Rogue Nation (2015), making him the first person to direct more than one film in the franchise. The cast includes Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin, all of whom reprise their roles from previous films, along with Henry Cavill and Angela Bassett, who join the franchise. In the film, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team must track down stolen plutonium while being monitored by a CIA agent (Cavill) after a mission goes awry.
Two years after the capture of Solomon Lane,[N 1] the remains of his organization The Syndicate have reformed into a terrorist group known as The Apostles. Ethan Hunt receives details of a mission to intercept the sale of three plutonium cores to members of the group, who are acquiring them for their latest client, fundamentalist John Lark whilst at a safehouse in Belfast. The mission takes him to Berlin where he meets Benji Dunn and Luther Stickell, but the mission fails when Ethan chooses to save Luther's life and the plutonium is taken by the Apostles. The team captures and interrogates a nuclear weapons expert, Nils Debruuk, who has been working with the group to build three portable nuclear weapons, and obtain information on the Apostles' next move.
CIA Director Erica Sloane instructs Special Activities Division operative August Walker to shadow Ethan as he attempts to retrieve the plutonium. Ethan and Walker HALO jump into Paris, where they infiltrate a fundraiser party at the Grand Palais where John Lark is set to buy the cores from the Apostles, with an arms dealer known as the White Widow acting as a broker. They track a man whom they suspect to be Lark to a bathroom, where a fight ensues and Lark is killed by Ilsa Faust. To complete the mission, Ethan impersonates Lark and meets the White Widow. Agents of the Apostles have been sent to kill John Lark and the White Widow, but she and Ethan escape.
In order to secure the plutonium, the White Widow tasks Ethan with extracting Lane from an armoured convoy moving through Paris. She provides one of the plutonium cores as a payment in kind for the mission. Ethan and his team attack the convoy. A motorcycle and car chase ensues across Paris, with Ethan avoiding the White Widow's forces, the police and Ilsa, who has to kill Lane to fulfill her mission for MI6. The mission to extract Lane is successful, whereupon White Widow instructs the team to deliver Lane, as well as Ilsa, to London.
At the safehouse in London, Alan Hunley, Secretary of IMF, confronts Ethan about being John Lark, which Ethan denies. Ethan incapacitates Hunley to continue the mission. After being asked to monitor Lane, Walker unwittingly reveals himself to be the real John Lark, in association with Lane. Erica Sloane also notices and instructs a shadow CIA team to take Lane, Walker, and Ethan’s team in. The CIA team is in fact infiltrated by the Apostles and Walker orders them to attack the IMF team. Hunley is stabbed and killed in the ensuing fight by Walker, who then escapes. Ethan chases Walker to Tate Modern, where Walker escapes to a medical camp in Kashmir with Lane, but not before threatening the life of Ethan's estranged wife, Julia.
The team deduces that Lane's plan for the two remaining nuclear weapons is to contaminate the water supply of Pakistan, India, and China, affecting a third of the world's population. At the medical camp, Walker has arranged for Julia to be on-site to raise the stakes for Ethan. Solomon Lane activates the weapons, giving the detonator to Walker. Ethan takes off in pursuit of Walker in a helicopter, leaving Benji, Luther, and Ilsa on the ground to find the weapons. Luther finds the first weapon and is helped by Julia to defuse it. Ilsa and Benji find the second weapon and subdue Lane. Ethan and Walker engage in an aerial helicopter chase, before Ethan uses his helicopter to ram Walker's aircraft out of the sky. The two then fight on a cliff edge, where Hunt eventually kills Walker. Ethan gains control of the detonator while Luther, Ilsa, and Benji deactivate the bombs.
In the aftermath, the remaining two cores are safely recovered. Erica Sloane hands Lane over to MI6 through the White Widow, which earns Ilsa's exoneration. Ethan recovers from his injuries with the help of Julia while the rest of the team joins him in victory.
