Lena Dunham ( LEE-nə DUN-um; born May 13, 1986) is an American actress, writer, producer, and director. She is best known as the creator, writer and star of the HBO series Girls (2012–present), for which she has received numerous Emmy award nominations and two Golden Globe awards. Dunham's work on Girls also led her to become the first woman to win the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – Comedy Series in 2013. In 2014, Dunham released her first book, Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned" . Along with friend and Girls producer Jennifer Konner, in 2015 Dunham created the publication, Lenny Letter, which is supported by Hearst Corporation advertising.

Dunham was born in New York City. Her father, Carroll Dunham, is a painter of "overtly sexualized pop art", and her mother, Laurie Simmons, is a photographer and designer who creates artistic domestic scenes with dolls. Dunham's father is Protestant, and according to Dunham, a Mayflower descendant; Dunham's mother is Jewish. She has a younger sister, Grace, a model and student at Brown University, who appeared in Dunham's first film, Creative Nonfiction, and starred in her second film, Tiny Furniture. As children, both Lena and Grace were babysat by artists Maghen Brown, C. Finley and photographers Orrie King, Sherri Zuckerman and Catherine McGann. Dunham was raised in Brooklyn. She spent her summers in a rented house in Salisbury, Connecticut; Meryl Streep was a neighbor and family friend. Her parents later purchased a weekend family home in Cornwall, Connecticut.
Dunham attended Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn, New York, where she met Tiny Furniture actress and Girls co-star Jemima Kirke. She graduated in 2008 from Oberlin College, where she studied creative writing. While in college, she worked at Geminola, an upmarket fashion boutique in New York's West Village.

Comedian, actress and writer Lena Dunham caught the attention of greats in her industry when she wrote, direct, and starred in her first film, Tiny Furniture in 2010, winning Best Narrative Feature at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference. The then 24 year old had studied creative writing at Oberlin College, and soon scored a production deal with HBO for her own series, Girls, executive produced by Judd Apatow. Dunham wrote, directed, and starred in the series, and would garner much acclaim and numerous awards and nominations for the show.
