Carole Mallory, born 1942, is an American author, actress, former model, teacher and critic who appeared in the films Looking for Mr. Goodbar and The Stepford Wives. She was a mistress of writer Norman Mailer and kept notes and writings of this time, selling them to Harvard University in 2008 after the writer's death. Education and early career Carole Mallory was awarded an art scholarship from Springfield High School to Pennsylvania State University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. She began work toward a Master's Degree at Temple's Tyler School of Art, and found a temporary teaching position in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania. She taught art in her home town of Springfield, Pennsylvania. Mallory became a Pan Am airline stewardess and began modeling in Paris while still employed by the airline. Her first assignment was for French Vogue. She earned the term 'supermodel' over the course of her career and has appeared on the covers of a variety of magazines including Cosmopolitan, Newsweek, and three separate New York magazine covers. Acting Mallory filmed over fifty commercials.[citation needed] Her first spot was for Olympic Airlines, the award winning ‘no dancing in the aisles’ campaign, while on leave of absence from Pan American Airlines. She also appeared in an English Leather "All my men wear English Leather, or they wear nothing at all" commercial campaign which ran for ten years. Mallory starred as Madge in the play Picnic, and as Tiffany in Mary, Mary at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania.[citation needed] Mallory studied acting with Wyn Handman, the director of American Place Theatre in New York. When she moved to Hollywood, she studied with Harvey Lembeck in his Comedy Improvisation Workshop.[citation needed] Writing Mallory authored the book Flash about a female alcoholic surviving Hollywood. Gloria Steinem wrote that it was: "fast, smart and irresistible."[citation needed] In 2010, Mallory published a memoir, Loving Mailer. Between 1988 and 1996 Mallory was a journalist who interviewed celebrities, particularly writers and Hollywood people. She currently teaches memoir at Cheltenham Adult School and Widener University. She reviews movies for The Huffington Post, The Wrap and reviews books for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Norman Mailer material In 1983, she began a ten-year relationship with Norman Mailer. He urged her to quit acting and pursue writing. She went on to study writing at UCLA, NYU (with Margaret Atwood) and Columbia University (with Gordon Lish).[citation needed] When Mailer died, she sold seven boxes of documents and photographs to Harvard University containing extracts of her letters, books and journals.[1] In March 2010, Mallory released a memoir, Loving Mailer. Personal life As well as her relationship with Mailer, Mallory also had affairs with Warren Beatty, Peter Sellers, Robert De Niro,[2] Richard Gere and Rod Stewart. She was once engaged to Claude Picasso,[1] the son of Pablo Picasso and Fran├žoise Gilot. From 1978 to 1980 Mallory lived with Australian clothing designer Richard Tyler and managed his career. After securing Tyler the position of clothing designer for the film Can't Stop the Music, Mallory worked with him as Assistant Costume Designer. He went on to win the CFDA Award.[citation needed] Between 1992 and 2001 Mallory cared for her mother.
