Profile Bio Text
Mary Kay Fualaau (née Schmitz, formerly Mary Kay Letourneau; born January 30, 1962) is an American former schoolteacher who was imprisoned from 1997 to 2004 for child molestation of her 12-year-old student, Vili Fualaau. She gave birth to two of Fualaau's children while incarcerated. After her release from prison in 2004, she married Fualaau and took his name. Biography Early life She was born Mary Katherine Schmitz in Tustin, California, to university professor (and later presidential candidate) John G. Schmitz and chemist Mary Schmitz. She was known as Mary Kay to her family and called "Cake" by her father. She was the fourth of seven children, raised in a "strict Catholic household." When she was two years old, her father began his political career and successfully ran as a Republican for a seat in the state legislature. He held positions as a California state senator and U.S. Congressman and, after changing parties, he ran for president as an ultra-conservative American Independent Party candidate in the 1972 U.S. presidential election. In 1973, Mary Kay's 3-year-old brother drowned in the family pool at their home in the Spyglass Hill section of Corona del Mar, California. In 1982, her father's political career was severely damaged when it was revealed that he had fathered two children out of wedlock during an affair with a former student at Santa Ana College, where he had taught political science. Her father's affair caused her parents to separate, but they later reconciled. According to friends, Mary Kay felt betrayed and thought her mother was a cold person who "drove him to it" by denying her father affection. Her brother, John Patrick Schmitz, was the deputy counsel to President George H. W. Bush. Her other brother, Joseph E. Schmitz, was Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Defense under George W. Bush. Mary Kay attended Cornelia Connelly High School, an all-girls Catholic school in Anaheim, California, where she was a member of the cheerleading squad for Servite High School. During her high school years, she is reported to have "liked parties, boys, and traveling." She was also a student at Arizona State University, where it was claimed she was a "party-animal." ] First marriage While attending Arizona State University, Mary Kay met and married fellow student Steve Letourneau. They had four children. The first, Steven Jr., was conceived while she was enrolled at Arizona State University. She says she was not in love with Steve Letourneau and married him after being urged to by her parents. Mary Kay Letourneau and her husband left the university and moved to Anchorage, Alaska. After a year in Alaska, her husband was transferred to Seattle, Washington and she gave birth to their second child, Mary Claire. Mary Kay attended night classes at Seattle University and graduated in 1989. Later, she began teaching second grade at Shorewood Elementary School in the Seattle suburb of Burien, Washington. The Letourneaus' marriage reportedly suffered from financial problems and extramarital affairs by both husband and wife. Her attorney, former neighbor and friend David Gehrke said that she was "emotionally and physically abused by her husband" during the marriage and twice "went to the hospital for treatment, and police were called," although no charges were ever filed. She gave birth to two more children, son Nicholas and daughter Jacqueline. In May 1999, while incarcerated for child rape, Mary Kay divorced Steve Letourneau and surrendered custody of their four children to him. Crime, trial and conviction Mary Kay first met Vili Fualaau when he was a student in her second-grade class at Shorewood Elementary School in Burien, Washington; she later taught a sixth-grade class in which Fualaau was a student. In 1996, her relationship with 12-year-old student Fualaau turned from friendship, to flirtation, and then sexual. Letourneau was arrested in March 1997 after a relative of her husband, Steve Letourneau, notified the police. Her first child with Fualaau, a daughter named Audrey, was born in May 1997 while she was out of jail on bail. During the trial, she was examined and diagnosed with manic depression. She pled guilty and was convicted of two counts of second-degree child rape. She was sentenced to six months in the county jail and three years of sex offender treatment. At that time she was not required to register as a sex offender. As part of her plea bargain, she agreed to avoid any further contact with Fualaau. On February 3, 1998, Mary Kay had sexual relations with Fualaau in her car[ and at age 35 became pregnant a second time by Fualaau. She was arrested for violating the terms of her probation and the police found $6,200 in cash, baby clothes, and her passport inside her car. As a result, she was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in state prison. In October 1998, while serving
